Significant educative value lies in the indirect learning that takes place from the environment. We recognize that the hidden, yet pervasive influence of the environment impacts every fibre of the children’s mind and character. The Student Citizenship program at the Heritage School is an endeavour of the School to consciously create and extend the scope of the environment which facilitates children to become reflective, conscious citizens who act to make a difference in the society they are a part of.

As part of one of the projects, engaging with the real-life problems of people in the nearby residential areas and slum clusters, collecting and documenting evidences, and developing solutions in collaboration with governance agencies has been instrumental in not just in developing a sense of agency that any outcome can be achieved when one acts with authenticity of purpose and strategy, but also a deeper sense of commitment to action. Other areas where children’s role as active and responsible citizens in society has emerged have been the Tamil Nadu flood relief work, Nepal Earthquake relief work, developing evacuation routes for a nearby public space as part of the disaster management project, work related to the sanitation, drainage system and damaged roads in the local neighbourhood, among other such projects. Further, through projects such as Learn to Earn, students generated funds which they contributed to a non-governmental organisation working in the field of girl child education .

Thus, students experientially learn to identify issues of concern both locally and nationally, and also to link issues with relevant institutions within the executive, legislative, and judiciary.
